With the upcoming changes to Facebook’s terms of service on November 5th, bloggers will no longer be able to use an incentives like freebies, rewards, or even giveaway entries to entice readers to follow their pages. Getting your posts seen will be even more crucial before – since people won’t “like” your page unless they know you exist.
The way Facebook’s algorithm is set up makes it so where the more people that like and share your content, the more your content will pop up later in their newsfeed. In this case, hard work will definitely pay off in the long run. Here are my top tips to increase your post reach and fan engagement on Facebook.
Content is Key
This holds true for your blog, so why wouldn’t the rule apply within social media as well? Every time you share a blog post onto your page, add a blurb that makes your readers want to click. It could be an excerpt from the post, an engaging question, a funny anecdote – just say something. Only sharing the link looks spammy and will result in more “Hide All Posts” than click-throughs.
Ask a Question
Everyone loves to give their opinion. Don’t deny it – it’s why you became a blogger, right? Keep that in mind when you’re thinking of something to post on your Facebook page, and ask a question that people will want to chime in on. Controversial topics (e.g. vaccines or GMOs) will almost always lead to arguments and hurt feelings, so try to avoid those on Facebook (unless that’s the kind of topics you regularly blog about!) – however, you can still spice it up some by asking everyone’s thoughts on a current event or hot topic. Try to keep it within your niche, and then ask away!
Share Other Bloggers’ Content
This is my favorite way, not only to get my post reach up, but to show other bloggers that I really enjoyed their content. Seriously, I can’t tell you how many Scary Mommy posts have skyrocketed my post reach beyond the 100,000 mark. Find relative posts within your niche, and share on your page with a question or a quote. And if you’re lucky, they’ll return the favor.
Ask for a Like or Share
Now, don’t go overboard with this one. Having “Like this post if you are wearing shoes!” posted on your Facebook page just screams, “I’m desperate, please like me!!” However, the occasional “Share this so your friends can be informed, too!” says that you care about your readers and their loved ones. Avoid being spammy, but let your readers know that you love when they’re engaged.
Join a Tribe
I know this one sounds like I’m telling you to run off to the jungle, but that’s not the kind of tribe I’m talking about. Find like-minded bloggers, and form some sort of group. This way you can share each other’s content and help each other out. That’s why I love Blogging Mamas: once you find a group that you fit in with, finding things that you know you’ll like (and your readers will like!) is a lot easier. Just remember to always give back when you ask for help. [You can see what I mean with the Blogging Mamas List – we’re all in one spot so the feed is easy to find/like/share].
So, it’s your turn. What ways do you get your readers engaged on your Facebook page?
